Food Service Program Being Planned by the Westmoreland County Food Bank

FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM BEING PLANNED BY THE WESTMORELAND COUNTY FOOD BANK

The Westmoreland County Food Bank is again working to make sure that no children in Westmoreland County go hungry when school is closed this summer.  Over 51,000 children in the county receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but many of these children do not get enough to eat when school is out.  The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that low-income children continue to grow and learn during the summer.

The Summer Food Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is the largest federal resource available for local programs that combine mealtime with recreational and educational activities. The program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The program provides breakfast and lunch for all children 18 years of age or under at approved sites throughout the county.  Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.  Currently there are 16 tentative sites located in Monessen, Jeannette, Vandergrift, New Kensington, Greensburg, Irwin, Derry, and Latrobe. Eligible community sponsors are non-profit organizations, schools, and local governments.

The application deadline is May 2, 2016 and they are available on line here.

About Westmoreland County Food Bank

The Westmoreland County Food Bank serves nearly 45,000 area residents each year including 13,500 children and 4,950 seniors. WCFB currently has 61 member agencies in their network of emergency feeding sites.  Of those, 44 are food pantries in which low income consumers are able to access emergency food assistance throughout the month. Last year (2015), the Food Bank distributed over 7.6 million pounds of food.

50% of WCFB’s food comes from the federal and state governments and the remaining 50% from local donations, food drives, and Feeding America.  Administrative and fundraising costs account for 4% of the Food Bank’s operating budget.
