For more than a decade, Jerome Eidemiller has been volunteering at the Westmoreland County Food Bank. He and his wife of 65 years live in New Alexandria and have six children, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He has been a devoted volunteer rarely missing the opportunity to sort and pack food in the Food Bank’s warehouse each Wednesday morning. On September 1, Jerome will celebrate his 90th birthday! The Westmoreland County Food Bank is grateful for Jerome’s continued service to food insecure households throughout the county and wish him the happiest of birthdays.
- How have you been affected by hunger?
Jerome has been fortunate to have not struggled with hunger during his life. Starting with his grandfather, then his father and finally Jerome, his family operated a farm in New Alexandria growing all types of produce like sweet corn and soybeans. In 2013, his family sold the farm and while he was blessed with the ability to feed his family, Jerome feels that donating his time to help others is important.
- How has the Westmoreland County Food Bank impacted your life?
More than 10 years ago, Jerome attended a prayer breakfast. During the breakfast, a representative from the Westmoreland County Food Bank spoke about the agency’s programs and services and encouraged attendees to volunteer their time to help the organization fight hunger. After hearing the presentation, Jerome decided to start volunteering and he has each Wednesday since then. Beyond helping others, Jerome feels that his time volunteering has made him grow by becoming less shy and meeting new people.
- What would you tell someone who may be thinking about donating to the Food Bank?
For anyone that may be considering a donation of money or time to the Food Bank, Jerome wants others to know that, “it’s a good experience to help others” and he finds it very rewarding. He hopes that others consider trying it as well to experience this for themselves.
