On Thursday, February 9, the Westmoreland County Food Bank was thrilled to welcome Martina McBride’s Team Music Is Love charity initiative for a special Operation Fresh Express (OFE) food distribution event at the agency’s Delmont warehouse. Joined by Sheila Jones, from Team Music Is Love, this event served 169 food insecure households and distributed 23,986 pounds of food all with the support of 40 volunteers.

This month’s “Your Donation, Making a Difference” highlights the Team Music Is Love charity and their work throughout the world, as well as right here in Westmoreland County. For more information about the charity’s work, please visit TeamMusicIsLove.com.

What is Team Music is Love and how did it come about?

Through her Team Music Is Love charity initiative, country artist Martina McBride invites fans to join her in making the world a better place while on tour and in their own home towns. It’s all about bringing people together to do good through the power of music. Originally known as Team Martina and founded in 2011, Martina and her fans have partnered together on several successful fundraising and volunteer projects for various causes ranging from hunger relief to cancer research, combating domestic violence, and helping children in need. Team Music Is Love has attracted thousands of people from around the nation and the world to join Martina’s global charity movement. Initiatives have included starting a breast cancer research grant at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee, helping the Chastain Park Conservancy build a playground for children in Atlanta, Georgia, and starting a therapeutic music program providing musical instruments to orphaned children at Covenant House shelter in Guatemala City.

How did you find out about the Westmoreland County Food Bank and choose them as your charity of choice during the Love Unleashed tour?

Actually Google! I looked at the website and when you have as good of a website as yours, it was so easy to learn exactly what you do, who your serve, the programs you offer. I watched your videos and saw volunteers in action. Food banks can bring in volunteers and get a lot of people doing a lot of good. When I learned about the Operation Fresh Express Program, I knew Martina would want to be involved. Martina loves to feed people. She has a cookbook called Around the Table: Recipes and Inspiration for Gatherings Throughout the Year. She loves helping people through food. From her love of food, she loves going into communities to shed a light on a good cause.

What was your experience working with the Westmoreland County Food Bank?

Everyone was so nice and welcoming! Between your hospitality, prompt responses, and the organization of the event, the Westmoreland County Food Bank is a “well-oiled” machine. Sometimes these events can be like a pick-up game of basketball because there isn’t a lot of lead time, but this event was not the case. I was so impressed by the level of detail and professionalism and the distribution went off without a hitch.
